The Great EscapeThe Great Escape

Three firemen who are about to embark on an extreme hitchhiking challenge for the Charity are appealing for help in their efforts.

The three-man team, called ‘Stop, Drop and Roll’ after the action you are meant to take if you ever catch fire, are set to take part in the Great Escape event to raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity and the Great North Air Ambulance Service. The teams have 36 hours to get as far away from the starting point as possible – but are not permitted to spend a single penny on transport.

Wearing fire leggings and boots, Kris Jackson, 31, Euan Long, 27 and Bruce Kinloch, 21, will have to rely on their charm and powers of persuasion in the challenge, which in previous years has seen entrants make it to such far-off destinations as Las Vegas, Tokyo and the Canary Islands.

They have already been given train tickets to London by Virgin, and would like anybody with other offers of help to get in touch.

The team have been raising money in the build-up to the event, and have so far held a pub quiz and a charity car wash; they have also been aided in their fundraising efforts by TADEA LTD, the not-for-profit energy service for the North of England, which has provided £400 in sponsorship.

Kris Jackson said: “We have been planning this event for six weeks but there is only so much preparation you can do really. We’re all looking forward to it and it’s going to be a really good laugh. It is the first time we have done anything like this, so it could go horribly wrong – but I'm sure we will be having fun whatever!

“We are doing this event not only to raise the money for the two life changing charities but also to raise their profile. The Fire Fighters charity do fantastic work throughout the UK and the Great North Air Ambulance Service have saved so many lives – it's truly amazing when you consider they are completely self funded.

“We hadn’t quite managed to raise as much money as we would have liked because we only had six weeks, so it has been a big bonus that TADEA have sponsored us. We think it’s fantastic that the company is giving money to charity.”
