Nigel Septon & teamOffa's Dyke Walk

Nick Richards, Pete Griffith and Nigel Sephton, with occasional support from Blue, Patty, Dave, Joe and Steve set out on 26th April 2010, and for 10 days followed the path along King Offa's fortification from Prestatyn to Chepstow along the Welsh Border with England. North Wales Fire & Rescue Sevice kindly allowed the team use of a minibus, which was invaluable for carrying food and equipment. Mid & West Wales and South Wales were also extremely helpful in allowing the use of their fire stations and resources. It was hard going, but worth it, and the team managed to raise around £1000. Congratulations to them and thank you for the support of all brigades involved.

Cyclists head out across Wales!

The team of cyclists who cycled across Wales!Fire fighters from across Wales celebrated 9.9.9 day (9th September 2009) by getting on their bikes to cycle across Wales. Nine fire fighters from South Wales, including Assistant Chief Fire Officer Steve Skivens, travelled up to Caernarfon to start their 'Across-Wales Bike Ride' which saw them following the Lôn Las route down to Cardiff. The route was 227 miles long and they were joined on the last of the 4 days in Brecon by another 6 cyclists who followed the Taff Trail into Cardiff. While one group headed South, in North Wales two fire fighters took up the challenge of visiting every station in the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service on two wheels - a total of almost 400 miles of pedalling. Nigel Sephton, fire fighter, Deeside and Mark Jones, a former member of the Service, visited all 44 stations in turn, joined by other Service staff along the way.

Freefall Firefighters

Sitting on the edge of an airoplane - barely bigger than a family car - strapped to a person I met 4 hours prior, at over 10,000 feet (about 2 miles up) was the culmination of over 3 months preparation & literally hundreds of rejections, from all and sundry, to my question, "How d'you fancy parachuting for charity?" Most people can be talked into anything, especially for charity but parachuting, that's a different kettle of fish. There is absolutely no grey area. "I'll sponsor you - but I ain't doing it!!", was the set answer, I found. Luckily, Dean did find 8 like minded adrenalin junkies to jump and the date was set for 22nd May They were Jamie Thomas, Russ Britton, Jase Williams, Alan Cameron, Darren Austin, Dez Howells, Mark Bowditch, Vaughan Jenkins, Tony Baker and together they raised £877.15 for The Firefighters Charity.

Book Festival helps raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity

The Hay-on-Wye team! Each year the small town of Hay on Wye opens it arms to hundreds of visitors who come to the Book Festival. The fire fighters of Hay on Wye's retained station saw it as a great opportunity to promote the Fire Fighters Charity and over the 10 days of the festival held street collections and sold yellow helmets to the festivals goers. The sunny weather we had at the end of May brought out the donations and the station was able to raise £2652 for the charity.

A big thank you goes to FF Mike Ward, FF Les Davies, YFF Harry Ratcliffe, FF Mike Ayling, CM Steve Ratcliffe, WM Kit Wells, FF Richard Wildee and Eleanor Jones from Brecon FS.

North to South Wales Bike Ride: September 2009

The event, happening on 10th -12th Sept, will be an all Wales event visiting a number of fire stations along the way in North, Mid & West and S.Wales brigades.Check out the events page of the website to find out more.

Welsh supporters become fire fighters for the day!

Fire Fighters ExperienceA rather dull Sunday morning in November saw 20 apprehensive supporters turn up at the S.Wales training centre wanting to try their hands at being a fire fighter for the day. Under careful guidence they abseiled over the climbing wall, ran a line of hose across the yard, cut up crashed cars and entered the smoke house with a BA set on.By the end of the day all the participants had grins on their faces enthused by the unforgetable day they had experienced. If you wish to find out more about the next Fire Fighters Experience contact Deborah on 07766 901823.
