Hull and East Yorkshire World Cup Event - 22nd May 2010

I am writing to say thank you to all the volunteers who participated in the Hull and East Yorkshire World Cup event from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service.

It was a glorious day with over 2000 people attending the event, benefiting from the water donated by the following companies; Morrisons, Sainsbury's Turner Price, Countrywise and Blue Keld.

We were able to provide water to the 200 footballers taking part and raised a total of £221.87 for The Fire Fighters Charity, £150.00 of which was from sales of water alone. John Bolton of the Goodwin Trust has offered a further donation of £50.00 to the Charity, in respect of the water kindly provided for the Police and Ambulance personnel who attended on the day.

Following the success of this event and the number of football teams that took part (20 in total), the event will be held again next year over a two day period with 32 football teams of all nationalities registered in advance. The date for this event will be announced on the 14th July 2010 at the Awards Ceremony.

The Hull Daily Mail produced an article on this event and can be found on the following link:

Two MBEs for West Yorkshire FRS

Two long-serving members of staff have been named in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. Gipton Crew Manager, Stuart Wilson, and Jenny Thorpe, who works in the Reprographics Unit at fire HQ, received MBEs.

Stuart organised and ran the first-ever multi-agency 'Danger Ranger' week at Gipton Fire Station, and since then has seen around 10,000 children benefiting from this safety awareness training. He also volunteers as a Young Firefighter instructor and has helped 150 young people with essential life skills such as team-work, confidence and self-discipline. This has contributed significantly to a major reduction in arson, nuisance calls and anti-social behaviour in the area. His work for other good causes has helped raise £125,000 for the Fire Fighters Charity and £100,000 through the annual Flaming Charity concerts.

Jenny has worked at HQ for the last 35 years and is an ambassador for the Fire Fighters Charity. Her efforts, through events such as the Chief's Christmas Toy Appeal and the Summer Gala, have raised many thousands of pounds and directly helped hundreds of needy children. Despite recent ill-health her fundraising goes from strength to strength.

In a joint statement, Councillor David Ridgway, Chair of the fire authority, and Chief Fire Officer Simon Pilling described Jenny and Stuart as 'unsung heroes, willingly and regularly giving of their time and effort to improve the lives of others. They are remarkable people and for all their achievements we publicly salute them."

The Trail Blazer Challenge 2010

Tim Evers - Trail Blazer Challenge 2010Tim Evers is a fire-fighter from Yorkshire. He served in the Royal Engineers and specialised as a Bomb disposal operator. On the 6th September he will be setting off from John O'Groats on a charity fire engine drive, taking in every mainland fire service headquarters on his way to Lands End. The event will be in aid of The Fire Fighters Charity and Help For Heroes. Whilst on his travels he will be visiting Headley Court to highlight the fantastic work they are doing there. The BBC has kindly given Tim permission to take his fire engine around the Top Gear test track to help raise the profile of the event. On the Yorkshire leg of his trip, local celebrities will be joining him on the fire engine, such as Jo-Emma Larvin (Strictly Come Dancing), James Whitham and Carl Fogerty. Others will be announced as they are confirmed.

London should be a great part of this event as Tim will be parking his fire engine in Leicester Square. The opportunity to shake his bucket and hopefully raise a lot of money is one not to be missed. The fire engine will also act as a mobile advertisement. Tim has secured some sponsorship which has raised a good amount of money too.
The fire appliance itself has been graciously donated by Mr. James Smith, of Chariots of Fire. For full details contact www.chariotsoffire-bristol.co.uk.

Prior to the main event, Tim has organised an official launch that will take place on the 6th August in Rotherham at The Grange Park Golf Course. The evening will consist of live music from Full Circle (Tim's band), pork & stuffing butties, and a Charity auction, to kick off the fundraising. Items on offer include a signed cricket bat from Yorkshire, tickets to the Darts World Championships 2011, a family ticket to a Bradford Bulls game, signed Jonathan Ross photo and BBC merchandise donated by Jonathan Ross, vouchers for some of the best restaurants in Yorkshire, an M&S hamper, a signed Sheffield United Shirt, and lots more. Tickets are £7 each. For full details contact Tim on 07852 994 222. As more celebrities are confirmed and events unfold Tim will update his page on Facebook, at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=123154034370146&ref=mf.

Trainee Fire Pump Pull

Trainee fire fighters pump pull!Trainee Fire Fighters from West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue recently took to the streets of Wakefield to raise not only media interest, but more importantly the fantastic sum of £4000 which was split equally between The Fire Fighters Charity and The Peter Congon Neonatal Unit in Leeds.

The event, organised by WM Carl Fisher and CM Graham Johnstone, took place on 21 November with trainees pulling a 1938 Dennis Trailer Fire Pump ( provided by Blitz and Bits )weighing one ton, 10 miles through Wakefield City Centre . Cheques were presented at the graduation ceremony on 3rd December with Carl's son Sam presenting the cheque to Judith Wakefield who has worked on the neonatal unit for 20 years . This was particularly apt as Sam had been on that unit as a baby 19 yearas ago when he was born 12 weeks prematurely. .
