After opening their fire station to the public, Welshpool firefighters took to the local canal on Easter Monday to help run the town’s annual charity duck race.

The Montgomery Canal, just a few hundred yards from the fire station, was the venue for the competition where 1,200 numbered yellow ducks were sold off at £2 a go to eager wildfowl gamblers.

Deposited in the canal under starter’s orders, and with £200 at stake for the winner, competitors watched on as the bathtub birds made their way under the road bridge to the wharf and eventually to the finish line.

Welshpool Fire Station also took the opportunity to host an open day alongside the duck race, with stalls, raffles and refreshments for the soggy spectators.

Proceeds from the Open Day were in aid of The Fire Fighters Charity and the Children with Cancer Charity.
