This Sunday, 4 May, marks Firefighters Memorial Day – a day dedicated to honouring all those brave firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Also known as International Firefighters’ Day, it offers a moment to reflect on the selfless sacrifices made by firefighters across the world every day. It’s also a time to celebrate and thank all those currently serving, who work tirelessly to keep their communities safe.

Sherine Wheeler, our Chief Executive, says: “Today, on Firefighters Memorial Day, we honour the courage, dedication, and ultimate sacrifice of those who have given their lives in the line of duty. As the country prepares to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, we are also reminded of the firefighters who lost their lives here in the UK during the Second World War – whose families were part of the reason our charity was first founded. We stand with deep respect and gratitude for every member of the fire family, past and present, and thank them for all they do for communities across the UK and abroad.”

To mark the day, we will be flying flags at half-mast at all our centres and observing a minute’s silence at midday in remembrance of all fallen firefighters.

Let us take this moment to stand together in gratitude for our fire and rescue community – both in the UK and around the world.
