A team of 11 firefighters will run a 200-mile relay in aid of us this weekend, as a thank you for the support two members received at Harcombe House, our centre in Devon.

The crew from Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Blue Watch at Rewley Road Fire Station will take it in turns to run continuously round all 25 stations in the county on 24 June, which is expected to take them around 35 hours.

And in a fantastic show of support, their Chief Fire Officer is joining in and taking on the last leg too.

Crew Manager Matthew John, 31, helped to organise the challenge and says raising funds for us means a lot to all of them.

“We’re big on The Fire Fighters Charity in Oxfordshire anyway, but recently there’s been a couple of colleagues who used the facilities down at Harcombe House,” he says.

“They came back absolutely raving about it, saying how brilliant it was, and a lot of us on the Watch felt that we needed to do something to sort of repay that back to the Charity. We wanted to do something to say thank you for looking after our friends.

“I’ve not personally received support from the Charity, but I still have years in the job hopefully, so it’s almost like paying it forward too, in case I ever need it.”

The team, who had already raised more than £5,400 days before the challenge, will be starting at Banbury Fire Station and completing the challenge back at Rewley Road. While 11 are taking part in the run itself, another three colleagues will be supporting them and more from across the service will cheer them on throughout.
